During the hot months of summer my already claustrophobic feet scream to be let out of smothering sneakers and closed toe shoes. Usually I turn directly to the old summer standby: flip-flops. These can be bought for only a dollar or two at many stores, meaning that when I discover that I have lost last year's models, I do not have to break the bank to find more. The problems with the dollar flip-flop are that they usually fall apart in less than one summer season and they are not the safest shoes to wear. Flip-flops make my already weak ankles teeter fearfully and they often trip me up when my feet slip out of them. I have found that paying a little more for a decent pair of flip-flops will give me a better chance of hanging on to a pair for more than one year. And this year, tired of the inconsistency of flip-flops, I have transferred my affections to sandals with straps. These can range in appearance from feminine and flirty to hefty and masculine.
Whatever your preference, the multiple straps on these shoes mean they will stay on your feet better than flip-flops will without causing them to overheat. And if you need seriously durable summer shoes, look in the men's section. Men's products are often made to withstand more wear and are generally stronger, that's why they are my preferred choice.
